COURSE DESCRIPTION
Objective:
A common mantra of business academics is “publish or perish.” Indeed, at many business schools promotion and tenure decisions are based heavily on one’s ability to publish (regularly) in academic business journals. The intent of this course/seminar is to have all interested academics (particularly Ph.D. students and new assistant professors)consider issues relating to the publishing of relevant and rigorous scholarly research in business journals.
Content:
Topics that are normally addressed/discussed in this seminar include:
- What makes for significant research?
- What is interesting research?
- Crafting a scholarly manuscript
- Reasons manuscripts are rejected
- Navigating the publication process
- Managing a research project from conceptualization through publication
Timing:
The seminar will be about 24 hours in length and will be delivered between June 8 and June 13, 2023.
List of Seminar Topics:
Topic 1 – Building a (Personal) Research “Brand”
Topic 2 – Designing Impactful Research
Topic 3 – Understanding the Publishing Process
Topic 4 – Navigating the Review Process
Topic 5 – Crafting a Manuscript
Topic 6 – Other Miscellaneous Publication Issues
There will be opportunities for the audience to ask questions about the publication process. There is an expectation that the audience will spend an appropriate amount of time reading/preparing materials prior to the sessions.
(Seminar participants will be given several articles to read and then asked to think about what makes for an interesting article and a significant contribution. As a basis for discussion, each participant will be asked to bring to the seminar two published articles in his/her discipline…one that, in his/her opinion, is an interesting article and/or makes a significant contribution (i.e., a “good” article), and a second article that is not interesting and/or does not make a significant contribution (i.e., a “poor” article).)
